West Ham 1-0 Bournemouth: Michail Antonio heads home to secure win for Slaven Bilic's side in first Premier League game at the Olympic Stadium
West Ham 1-0 Bournemouth: Michail Antonio heads home to secure win for Slaven Bilic's side in first Premier League game at the Olympic Stadium
West Ham were missing their entire first-choice front three but Michail Antonio, playing as a makeshift right-back for the first few games of the season, appeared at the back post to head a late winner in their first Premier League match at the Olympic Stadium.
West Ham’s own sponsors Betway described Antonio as an ‘accident waiting to happen’ on Twitter when he played full-back against Chelsea on Monday night and he gave away a penalty that evening. But Antonio is also a goal waiting to happen when he is played further forward in his more comfortable position on the wing. Bereft of key players, West Ham needed someone to deliver and he was their man.
They have the new stadium and they clearly have the fans to fill it, but they also need the star players out on their pitch, too, and the mounting injuries are denying them that.

With all the crosses going into the box from right and left they needed a big man like Andy Carroll to head them in. He is out for up to six weeks with a knee injury. They could have done with a Dimitri Payet, constantly finding new angles and ways to break down the opposition defence. He was missing, too, yet to return to full fitness following his summer excursion to the Euro 2016 final with France. Enner Valencia looked light in the middle up front by himself, so where is your club record £20.5million signing when you need him? Out for four months, of course.
It made for a bitty, frustrating game and fans from both clubs took their time coming back to their seats after the break. There had not been much on show to make them hurry.
When Antonio went to take a quick thrown-in on the left and the ball slipped out of his hands and dropped behind him, rolling away, there were some jeers from the Bournemouth supporters. It summed up the first half; plenty of good intention, little execution.

Seven minutes in, Gokhan Tore had a cross blocked on the left and went for curler with the follow up, but was a fair way from the far left corner he was aiming at. Tore was involved again in the 37th minute, running on to Valencia’s flick on as West Ham broke quickly, eventually feeding Antonio who scuffed his shot wide of the left post.
That was still far more offered far more than their opponents Bournemouth, though. Antonio, despite his rather unfortunate throw-in, was one of the better players, alongside Cheikhou Kouyate driving West Ham’s attacks forward from midfield.
Tore often looked like making something happen down the right with close control and skill, even if that final ball did not end in a goal and he eventually provided the assist to win it. Valencia finally registered a testing shot on target five minutes before the break, but Artur Boruc pushed it away. Eddie Howe’s side had one shot on goal in the first 45 minutes and that was off target.

King (right) and Bournemouth's forward players struggled to get into the contest in the first-half at the stadium on Sunday
They rectified that within the first 10 minutes of the second and Bournemouth threatened a goal. Adam Smith ran with the ball and shot low, but Adrian saved and held the ball. Jordan Ibe, the £15million signing from Liverpool, got in behind West Ham’s defence but tried to square the ball to Callum Wilson instead of shooting and the ball was blocked. Joshua King came closest, striking the ball from 25 yards and forcing Adrian to tip it over.
But when Arter was sent off in the 78th minute for a second yellow card, West Ham finally got the advantage they needed to clinch it. Arter’s first booking was for dissent when referee Craig Pawson awarded a free kick against him for handball in the first half, the second when he pulled back Kouyate on the break.
It had all got a bit tetchy towards the end. Ibe was substituted moments later and strolled off. James Collins tried to help him on his way and the Bournemouth winger was far from impressed. He was trying to delay time. He did not delay long enough.
Tore dug out a cross from the left, with 85 minutes on the clock, all the way over the Bournemouth goalkeeper and Antonio leapt in at the back post, over everyone, to head in.
