Bastian Schweinsteiger returns to Manchester United training after four month exile from Jose Mourinho's first-team squad

Bastian Schweinsteiger has returned to first-team training with Manchester United, after months of exile from Jose Mourinho's squad.
The former Germany international had been forced to train on his own this season, with Mourinho making it clear that the 32-year-old was not part of his plans.
But Schweinsteiger was spotted back in training with his team-mates on Monday, just days after being left out of the club's squad photograph.

He was pictured smiling during the session with Wayne Rooney, who looked delighted to see his team-mate return to the fold, as well as coming under the watchful eye of Mourinho.
Phil Jones was also back in first-team training after returning for injury, as was the unfancied Henrikh Mkhitaryan, alongside a host of more regular stars.
Whether this will mean a return to the match-day squad for the World Cup winner or not is unknown, but it is a start for Schweinsteiger, who had also trained with the under-23 side this season.
He was a regular member of Louis van Gaal's side last year when fit, although injuries limited the former Bayern Munich man to just 13 Premier League games.
But he is yet to play a single minute under Mourinho, and is expected to leave the club at the end of the season, if not before.
That is despite the fact that United actually perform far better with him in the side than without.
In the 30 games he has missed since signing, under Van Gaal and Mourinho, United have won only 13 games, or 43 per cent, compared to 10 wins in 18 (56 per cent) without him.

The 32-year-old's contract - worth in excess of £130,000 a week - does not run out until the summer of 2018, with United willing to let him go on a free transfer.
Schweinsteiger attended last Wednesday night's EFL Cup win over rivals City and has tweeted messages of support despite being told he has absolutely no future at Old Trafford.
His locker in first team changing room at Carrington has been cleared out and one of the coaches takes him aside each day while he trains on his own.
He remains friendly with a number of the first team players but there it had seemed as though there was no chance that he will play with them again at Manchester United before he returned to training on Monday.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi still top football rich list despite Gareth Bale's new £346,000-per-week deal... but who else is in the top 10?

  • Gareth Bale has signed a huge new contract with Real Madrid
  • The Welshman will take home £18million per year AFTER tax
  • But Bale is still not the highest-paid player in the world
  • Manchester United have three players among the world's top-10 best paid
  • The Chinese Super League is also forking out big bucks to players
Gareth Bale won't be worrying about turning the heating on this winter after securing an eye-watering new contract with Real Madrid worth £346,000 per week.
Yet the Welshman still does not top football's rich list despite putting pen to paper on a deal that will net him £108million over the next six years.
That honour remains held jointly by the inseparable superstars who have propelled the game - and its financial rewards - to dizzy new heights over the past decade, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

But Bale's huge new wage is still eclipsed by that of Lionel Messi (left) and Cristiano Ronaldo
The pair both take home a barely believable £365,000 per week - that's £19m each and every year - AFTER tax.
Real Madrid and Barcelona pay their prized assets a net wage after the Spanish tax man has taken his share, meaning that the duo's lead over their rivals in the footballers' rich list is even bigger than it appears.
If the Real and Barca players' salaries are judged like their counterparts from the Premier League - i.e. before tax is paid on their wages - Bale's new contract would be worth a simply staggering amount.
Given the Spanish income tax rate applicable to the players is 45 per cent, that would put the figure Real are paying for Bale at £32.7m per year - or £629,000 per week. Using the same extrapolation, the clubs are each forking out £664,000 per week for Ronaldo and Messi - £34.5m per year.
Real remain insistent, however, that the gross figure on Bale's contract remains around £18m, although Sportsmail understands that the figure is far higher given the sum due to the tax man.
English football's highest earner is Paul Pogba, whose £89m summer return to Manchester United from Juventus sees him earn £290,000 per week and £15m per year.

10= Sergio Aguero (Manchester City) £240,000 per week £12.5m per year
10= Yaya Toure (Manchester City) £240,000 per week £12.5m per year
All estimated figures are pre-tax, except * where figures are post-tax. Sums may vary according to bonus payments.
United, despite struggling since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson, have three men among the top 10 highest-paid footballers in the world, with Wayne Rooney (£260,000 per week, £13.5m per year) and Zlatan Ibrahimovic (£250,000 per week, £13m per year) both making fortunes from life at Old Trafford.
Their noisy neighbours at the Etihad Stadium boast two players in the top 10; Sergio Aguero and Yaya Toure both pocket £240,000 per week. Given the latter has been frozen out by Pep Guardiola this season, he is effectively earning £12.5m per year for playing no football at all.
To put these gargantuan salaries into context, the average wage in the UK in 2016 is £27,500 per year, while Theresa May will earn £143,462 for leading the country over the next 12 months - that's around half of what Pogba earns in a week.
The only other league to make an impression on the best-paid players list is not Serie A or the Bundesliga, but the Chinese Super League.

Graziano Pelle won't be on too many people's minds when it comes to choosing the best players on the planet, but he is nevertheless among the most lucratively paid.
The Italy striker's summer transfer from Southampton to Shandong Luneng cost £13m - but he will earn more than that in his first year at the club thanks to his contract, worth a remarkable £260,000 per week.
Completing the top 10 is Hulk, the Brazil striker who also now plies his trade in China with Shanghai SIPG.
Despite never playing in one of the world's major leagues, the muscular 30-year-old is the world's fourth-best paid footballer on a £317,000-per-week contract. That's £16.5m per year for a man whose international scoring record of 12 in 48 games is barely more impressive than Emile Heskey's.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic's place is in jeopardy... there is no way Manchester United should be below Watford

Manchester United did not play badly on Saturday. It was a penalty in the first half when Matteo Darmian was tripped.
Mark Clattenburg’s dismissal of Ander Herrera was a travesty because he clearly slipped, and Tom Heaton, Burnley’s goalkeeper, was magnificent, and so were his defence.
Yet just four wins in 10 cannot be mere misfortune and the league table contains a worrying detail. Manchester United have the same points and goal difference as Watford, but are a place behind them due to fewer goals scored. That is the problem Jose Mourinho must address.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic has not scored in five starts, which is part of Manchester United's woes
Zlatan Ibrahimovic has not scored in five starts, which is part of Manchester United's woes

Watford defeated Manchester United 3-1 last month and Walter Mazzarri is doing a fine job. Yet there is a difference between a one-off game and consistency over 10 matches. Watford may fancy their chances on the day, they certainly wouldn’t have expected to boast a better record than Manchester United — albeit by one goal — with more than a quarter of the season gone.
The top three all have 23 or 24 goals. Manchester United have 13. It may be time for a change.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic has no goals in five starts in all competitions and no goals in six starts in the Premier League. He last scored against Zorya in the Europa League on September 29.
He last scored in the Premier League on September 10, against Manchester City. He last scored in a league match that Manchester United won on August 19.
Jose Mourinho endured a frustrating afternoon and was sent to the stands in the second-half
Jose Mourinho endured a frustrating afternoon and was sent to the stands in the second-half
He has had more shots since last scoring — 42 — than any other Premier League striker has mustered all season. And against Burnley he missed the best chance of the match, with minutes remaining.
It is not that he is playing poorly, but he is not scoring — and neither are United, just a single league goal in October. Meanwhile, Marcus Rashford is being used in a wider forward role, while Wayne Rooney is barely used at all. Leaving him out of the side has made little impact on results.
It may be time for a reshuffle, a shake-up, a rotation of positions, if not personnel.
And, yes, sometimes statistics can be misleading. Manchester United had 37 shots at the weekend and drew 0-0; Watford did not get a shot on target against Hull, and won 1-0 thanks to an own goal.
It does not matter. However the luck ran, with the resources at their disposal there is no way United should be outgunned by Watford this year.

Arsenal may be flying, but watch out Arsene Wenger... November is the month the Gunners always

  • Arsenal have started the Premier League season well and are second
  • Gunners only trail Manchester City on goal difference at top of the table
  • But historically they have struggled in November every season
  • Arsene Wenger's side have their lowest average points in that month
  • Gunners face Tottenham and Manchester United in coming weeks

  • Remember, remember the curse of November, Arsene.
Arsene knows. He knows not to champion his side as contenders for the title on the eve of the calendar's most cruel month.
For there is something about November that makes Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger very nervous.
Arsene Wenger may be smiling at the moment, but he is facing his most difficult month

Indeed, rather than accept the plaudits as the Gunners sat momentarily top following Saturday's 4-1 win at Sunderland, he was guarded, instead pointing to the pitfalls of a month which ranks as the worst of his 20 years in charge.

And here is why, a points-per-game ratio of just 1.59. It is the month where questions are asked of his management and, invariably, his future. Compare that to 2.18 points per game in March, the month where, in recent seasons, Arsenal have made a belated bid for the top.
The November goal difference also tells its own story - plus 32 compared to a massive plus 109 in April.
So what does go wrong when the clocks go back?
But Wenger will need his team to avoid their usual November struggles to win the title

Last year they began November with a thrashing by Bayern Munich in the Champions League
Twelve months ago they had won five on the spin in the Premier League before a November which opened with a 5-1 drubbing at Bayern Munich and was followed by a fortunate home draw against Spurs, defeat at West Brom and a draw away to Norwich.
A month which had started with talk of the title ended with calls for the Frenchman to go.
Go back two years, even. And, after back-to-back defeats to Swansea and Manchester United, one banner inside the Emirates Stadium read: 'Enough is enough. Wenger out'.
Three years ago? Again, a 1-0 defeat at Old Trafford in which the only goal was scored by his former captain and striker Robin van Persie.
Let's go back to 2012, this one was particularly nasty. On November 3, again at Old Trafford, Arsenal lost 2-1. Who scored the opener in his first appearance against his old club? Yes, Van Persie. Worst of all, however, was the 'vile and unfunny abuse' - as Sportsmail put it - to which Wenger was subject throughout the game. They went on to drop six more points with draws against Fulham, Aston Villa and Everton.

Manchester United 0-0 Burnley: Jose Mourinho sent to the stands and Ander Herrera sees red as Tom Heaton's heroics provide Clarets with unlikely point

On the day Sergio Aguero rediscovered his shooting boots for Manchester's other lot, United's main man Zlatan Ibrahimovic extended the worst scoring run of his career and ended up looking every one of his 35 years.
The legend of Ibrahimovic was signed to great fanfare to win matches like this. Instead, he and United registered 37 shots on goal but failed to capitalise against a Burnley team who in fairness defended brilliantly.
When Jose Mourinho and his players needed that piece of magic to beat the inspired Tom Heaton in goal, the kind Zlatan dined out on in places like Barcelona, Paris and Milan, it was missing.

United will fervently hope the decline is only temporary as they now stand eight points adrift of co-leaders Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal.
Ibrahimovic's best moment was a trademark overhead kick that was brilliantly saved by Heaton, its power injuring the goalkeeper.
Other chances inside the box came to nothing, including a that drifted on to the bar. In the final minute, Paul Pogba squeezed a cross to the super Swede. The 13-time league champion fluffed his lines, missed the target and held his head in shame.
For someone of his talent and ego, it was a sad moment.

United will wonder how they allowed Burnley to leave Old Trafford with their first point of the season even though they played the final quarter with only 10 men following the unfortunate dismissal of Ander Herrera.
Certainly, part of it was down to the brilliant former United trainee Heaton who saved from stand-in captain Juan Mata and Ibrahimovic within the first five minutes, and followed up with worldies from Jesse Lingard and Ibrahimovic again.
But there was also a lack of composure and confidence in United's ranks when the chances came. Burnley's Mancunian defenders Michael Keane and Ben Mee were heroic in the heart of their defence but they aren't Carlos Puyol and Fabio Cannavaro, guys who Zlatan has played with and against.

Lingard struck the post and United had three loud penalty appeals waved away, the first for a tug by Jon Flanagan on Matteo Darmian that incensed Mourinho so much he vented at referee Mark Clattenburg in the tunnel at half-time and was sent to the stands for the second 45 minutes.

United's unfamiliar line-up saw four left backs line up in defence – Darmian, Daley Blind, Marcos Rojo and Luke Shaw.
Most of the time the action was up the other end though, as Burnley survived with minimal possession though Icelandic international Johann Gudmundsson's shot at David de Gea with their best opening.
'Heaton was superb,' confessed their manager Sean Dyche afterwards. Of the Ibrahimovic effort where the goalkeeper made himself large and took the force of the shot before it deflected on to his leg and clear, Dyche joked: 'He's just spread himself, hasn't he.'
'I thought I'd broken my arm,' admitted the goalkeeper.

United plodded through much of the opening 45 minutes. The one decent piece of interplay between Ibrahimovic and Pogba saw the Swede's shot blocked by the head of Mee.
Zlatan missed a one-on-one and Lingard's flick header was bound for the top corner until Heaton dived and clawed it away.
Herrera left his studs on Dean Marney's thigh and got a yellow – which was to be significant later on – and after 44 minutes, Mourinho went potty when Darmian ran across Flanagan into the box and went down as the defender put a foot and an arm across the Italian's wrist.
Mr Clattenburg, probably correctly, failed to point to the spot as the contact was minimal and initiated outside the box. Mourinho continued his argument down the tunnel at half-time and was officially dismissed.
He tried to take a seat in the front row of the stands in order to be close to the dug-out but was ordered higher up where he sat on the end of a row in the directors' box.
Faria admitted there was communication between them. 'Yes. Normally we define situations according the difficulties of the game. Sometimes a detail is important,' said the United No 2.
'But I don't think (the sending-off) was important to the result of the game.'
Indeed the second half was breathless even without Mourinho being a visible presence pitchside.
Mata's shot from Ibrahimovic's cutback was brilliantly stopped by Heaton from eight yards. Ibrahimovic's shot was blocked by Mee and Mata was then thwarted by Keane, Mr Clattenburg ruling the defender couldn't have got out the way even if it had hit his shoulder.

Darmian had a third penalty shout denied following a meaty challenge by Ashley Barnes and Ibrahimovic's acrobatic take-off didn't work from the full back's cross.
Even Herrera's red card, given when he slipped into Marney and got a second yellow, didn't stop United surging forward though Faria – standing in for Mourinho post-match – could have been impersonating his boss when he sarcastically remarked: 'Fantastic work from the referee.'
Rooney and Marouane Fellaini came on but Burnley's blue wall stayed firm, just.
'You could see there wasn't a lot left in the tank at the end,' said Heaton. Rooney skied the final opportunity from 20 yards and Old Trafford booed Clattenburg's signal that fie minutes of injury time were over.
Mourinho's actions will again prove a distraction from the result, United's third Premier League game without a goal.
But he will have plenty to think about in his lonely hotel room over the next few days. More than match officials, he needs his star No 9 to turn in a decent show.
